Wintertime Fishing in the Great Outdoors
Don’t let the snow and ice fool you, the fish are biting all year long in Boundary Country! Take a deep breath of crisp mountain air, then get to work. Clear a skiff of snow from the lake’s frozen surface and drill a slushy hole. Then erect your shack or tent and drop in your line. Just beneath the glassy ice surface are rainbow trout, brook trout, burbot, and mountain whitefish. Ice fishing is a perfect midday winter activity. For those of you that have never tried ice fishing, come to Boundary Country in February. The annual Wilgress Lake Ice Fishing Derby, held the Family Day weekend, is a great place to learn and have fun.

Fun on the Ice
There are several places where you can settle in for a day of ice fishing. Some of the locals’ favourites include: Jewel, Williams, Wilgress and Xenia Lakes.
In the coldest years, when conditions permit, Christina Lake is the hot spot for winter fishing. This is where you’ll catch brag-worthy freshwater trout and small-mouth bass.

Know Before You Go
Note that you must have a fishing licence to fish in any season in the province of British Columbia. Ice fishing is a tame sport but it becomes dangerous if you do it on thin ice! Be sure to check ice thickness as you explore and be sure to dress warm!
